Today for Wedding Wednesday we have a guest post all about flower preservation by the lovely Desna of Desna's Designs!

Your wedding bouquet becomes a focal point on your big day and represents a significant investment both monetarily and emotionally. It’s with good reason that brides want to preserve their wedding day memories by preserving their bouquet. And, if using a professional, handing those flowers over to someone else requires some trust. It’s important to choose a preservationist that will use the right method to achieve the results you desire. This article will discuss three floral preservation options and some important aspects to consider when selecting how to have your bouquet preserved.

Wedding Bouquet Preservation Options

Do It Yourself (DIY)

Floral preservation at the Do It Yourself (DIY) level can be simple. Opinions vary on the best DIY methods. Some of the most popular options include air drying, book pressing, microwaving, and the use of moisture-absorbing agents like silica gel. With each of these methods, timing must be impeccable to receive desirable results. The most common mistake people make is over-drying the flowers. Over dried flowers are brittle and break very easily. Another consideration is how to encase the flowers, which can be difficult without the proper expertise and resources. For those who aren’t as concerned about the end result but still want to save their flowers from complete deterioration, DIY methods can be an acceptable option.

Resin

Resin preservation offers a durable, 3D way to display flowers that will prevent them from wilting or crumbling over time. Resin’s versatility allows for a wide range of keepsake styles—like blocks, coasters, trays, or ring holders—and can even incorporate personal mementos such as lace or invitation pieces. It does, however, come with significant drawbacks. The process is time-consuming, often taking up to 16 weeks to complete. Flowers can shift in color—whites may yellow, and vibrant tones can darken—making the final result unpredictable. Over time, resin itself will yellow and become cloudy, diminishing the original clarity. Additionally, not all flowers preserve well in resin, requiring extra preparation or even substitutions.

Suspended in Time® – Pressed or Lifelike 3D

At Desna’s Designs, we are an authorized dealer of Suspended in Time, and use their patented method of flower preservation. This revolutionary process leaves flowers more vibrant than any other method in the market. It’s the only method available where flowers can be dried in 3 – 5 days. The speed of this process results in much less deterioration, making the flower color and shape retention far superior to other methods. Any flower can be preserved with this method, in contrast to other methods that can only preserve certain flowers under certain circumstances. All encasements are completed with a two-fold moisture barrier to keep air and humidity out. Flowers can be done pressed in a frame or necklace, or in lifelike 3D in a frame, shadow box, table dome, jewelry box or ornament. Additionally, we use the highest quality UV protection on all of our wall pieces to protect from light damage. Your final product will be museum quality that will last for generations.

Here's an example from one of my couple's Kenzie and Kent! Kenzie and Kent decided to do the Lifelike 3D option with Desna's Designs and included in Kenzie's bouquet, Kent's boutonniere, and one of their wedding photos!
